It’s Wes Smith Yo – The Album Remixed Vol 1 : DJ Smooth Interview

Hey hey friends, today I’m kicking off the interview series for my forthcoming remix album.  First up is DJ Smooth out of Orlando.   I met up with Mike about 6 months back b/w of the Funky Flavor crew who brought me out in the summer.   He recently reworked “Hands Up” and then had a nice chat with our head field agent about all things BASS…  Peep the interview below…

Tell me about your start:
I started the Scratch Academy in Miami about 4 years ago where I learned the basics on vinyl, etc for 6 months and then I moved to Orlando.

How did you come to do a remix for this album?
I met Scotty Frazier [Funky Flavor Breakbeat Culture] and I showed Scotty a few projects so Scotty introduced me to Wes Smith and he hit me up to do a remix.

What’s the DJ Smooth spin on the remix?
My style brings in electro and trap elements with a breaks flavor.

What else are you working on right now?
Goldillox [Danielle Wells] and I have a new project called HYPER MONK3Y and we have about 20 tracks together already. We are looking to drop that closer to the Winter Music Conference in Miami, it’s really high energy and a lot of fun. Also, I have another collab with a friend in Tampa we just did a show together for Halloween as HardCastle & McCormick. We work really well together and have a darker trap style.

The G-Spot is on the Loose | Check out the Interview, Release and Other Fun;)

My remix for G$Montana’s “G-Spot” dropped this week on Gigabeat Records.  The original was written by Geo Lopez aka G$Montana of Project Mayhem (Miami).  Geo and I first met @ WMC 2014 when I played his Gimme A Break Pool Party.  Since then we’ve played a few fun parties together and worked for some of the same promoters.

Kelly Ross/Agent 137 recently ported herself down to Miami to talk with Geo about what it means to be a promoter-turned-DJ/producer and how he finally came up with G Spot.  Check the interview below.

Hi Geo, I know it was your birthday last week, tell me about the weekend:

It was awesome and the first time I had an really awesome birthday in a very long time because it fell on a weekend. On Friday I played the “Breaks Yo” party in Miami where I played early enough to have a good time and late enough to have a great crowd. It was a night of entertaining people and networking – it was crazy. Martin Flex ripped it the fuck up, TwoSweet of the Geishas was a beast, she just made it happen. Then on Saturday I went to Tampa for Revelation where I got to play and also watch Wes Smith absolutely crush it.

When I met you it was in Miami back in 2013, you hosted a Hotcakes/Essential Bass show that was my Miami debut. How did you get into hosting shows?

I was into throwing parties way back in the day and my birthday was coming up so i met with a club owner. I convinced the him that I could bring 100 people to the club for my birthday, so he gave me the side room. I offered to pay him and I packed it out, so eventually he gave me the other room so I put in drum & bass and breaks. People were buying bottles so I sparked it up again and then the club owner gave me all five rooms (jungle, electro breaks, house, etc). The event went on until the venue was sold. It started with a birthday party and became a real business. Then this other production company came up and saw I had drive, motivation and ambition so they asked me to do an event at a new venue. I grabbed it and said I can make it happen. I/O Lounge in the center of Miami right near Space. I did my first major party called Masters of Mayhem there with a ridiculous lineup of 45 artists, the line was down the sidewalk with 2700 people inside. From there we started Project Mayhem, a spin off of that party with Mike aka Malo to become a Miami entertainment promotions agency.

Suddenly, the phone gets muffled and Geo yells out:

… sirens wail… breakbeat starts… shake shake…shake…rahhhhhhh!!!

 

This continues for about three minutes only broken by him asking if I can hear it. We laugh, he apologizes, asks me if I like the new tune and when i approve, he tells me to continue.

 

That’s my new track vs Neuroziz. We are putting in my flavor and he is putting in his flavor and we are shaking it up. Working together is fun to meld our sounds together. So far I am liking what I am hearing. Sorry, go ahead…

Perfect segway, Geo, tell me how you got started with djing & production:

I had been in the scene since 1997 – during that time i would always walk up to the DJ and ask them how they made it happen. I was interested in promoting and creating events but would always go to studios and ask my friends all kinds of questions on how things work.

At some point I figured I might as well start djing, all my friends I had met as a promoter, like Eddie Light and Phat Kidz, were all sending unreleased tracks, so I starting DJing 2 years ago after WMC [Winter Music Conference]. I bought my first pair CDJS and a flight case on Craigslist, I wanted to play out with the people that had become family to me and I started playing with them.

As an agency i would tell artists to create an identity but also to go beyond djing and make their own beats. Djing alone doesn’t mean you are gonna make it big and it would be critical not to produce after I told all my friends and artists they needed to produce. I realized I needed to get serious and need to make this happen so I spent months and months in the studio learning. I do my main job during the day, run into the studio all night, fall asleep and do it all over again. It took me 4 months to make the track, but I finished that original then shot it off to Wes Smith. He remixed it and here we are… Regardless, I feel like I have big shoes to fill because I have seen all these artists all my life and hung out with them, but I have to be a producer and dj well. I expect no handouts, I want to learn and get opinions to make sure I am following in the footsteps of others, I still have to prove myself.

Talk to me about G Spot:

It’s on the label Gigabeat and will release Oct 20th. Micheal Anthony Lauzardo (aka Malo aka slip 187 knew me from the start). My choice for the remix was my favorite producer Wes Smith. His style is different with a funk flavor that is just wow. I’m really excited about it’s release.

What’s next for Geo Lopez/G$Montana? Will I be meeting up with you again in Miami for WMC?

Yes! After coming off tour in San Diego for Wiggle (thank you Wes Smith and Omega Squad) and St Louis (thank you XeroTribe) and playing in Florida, I’m back in the studio again. My goal is to have 6 finished tracks by March for the WMC events so I can play half of my own set and the other half my fav artists. One of the greatest pleasures is when an artist you look up to plays your tune it’s so humbling and such and honor, you want to run up and say thank you so much. Like Wes Smith did at the Tampa show this weekend. I got to sit back and observe from a different perspective than just djing it and the reaction was great- so very very appreciate of that.

What’s for next : Oct 23rd Breaks Yo! and I just joined Theoryon Records as my new booking agency, Gary Gitlin works hard and makes it happen, I’m proud to be a part of the family.

It’s Wes Smith Yo! Burning Man 2015 Tour @ Slut Garden

Dot Diggler is next for my “It’s Wes Smith at Burning Man Yo!” interviews.  Dot resides at Slut Garden during his stay in the dust. This is a camp that I remember well from last year – it’s colorful, fun and the music was always on point. Getting to see Wes play up on that stage is going to be a sight to see with the crowd dressed up in their space wear. BOOM!

Slut Garden is certainly an interesting name – tell me about Slut Garden and what you all are about:

We are the ultimate party on the playa and are a real interactive camp. Whether it is the shadow boxes, platforms, The Wet Spot (bar), dome or clothing exchange (Slutty Seconds). We have people who go out in the crowd to recruit girls to dance in the shadow boxes and we aim to never have them empty of sexy silhouettes dancing.

What’s your role for Slut Garden?

I’m in charge of staging build scaffolding, setting up the lighting and am a main residency DJ. I am based out of Seattle but the founding members and campers are mainly from Portland and Montana.

That’s great – how did you get involved with Slut Garden?

This is my second year with Slut Garden, after my first burn I played a hip hop set with my best friend Matt (Pressha) for a hip hop happy hour. Slut Garden was having some sound issues so I jumped under the sound booth and fixed what was wrong. They were appreciative and they asked me to come back to play. I started with an empty crowd and once I was done there was a huge crowd. I was offered to play a fundraiser in Seattle and it just exploded from there. I don’t rep a crew or a label when it comes to Slut Garden…so I promo the heck outta it and get the word out about them.

Wednesday: Sluts In Space when Wes Smith is playing, it’s an astronaut/space themed event.

Thursday: Booty Wonderland with Deekline and Dot Diggler ++

You were the one that booked Wes. How do you know about Wes Smith all the way in Seattle?

I asked Wes if he would be down to play a set – he is one of my favorite producers. I found his tracks awhile back and the tracks went off really well at the burn one of my good friends Justin (Blacklist) Alson also plays a lot of his tunes out as well.

Any advice to aspiring DJs/producers out there going to Burning Man?

It’s good to make connections in this industry it is very hard if you do not. Everyone is a dj/producers/etc so you really have to set yourself apart from the others.

Tell me why you do all of this and keep coming back to Burning Man:

One of the reasons why I love Burning Man is because breaks are reigning supreme (parallel with house). I have been a breaks DJ for 15 years ever since I heard Icey’s Essential Mix and then started getting into Baby Anne, Fixx, Volume, Huda Hudia, Deeklline, Plump DJs, Freestylers and Stanton Warriors. I have been blessed to play with most of them except Deekline and that comes true this year.

Also, I have never met such a hard-working group so focused on their goal. It’s a camp full of Alphas and surprisingly-  it really works. The founder of Slut Garden, Brad, is the shit. He is a superb leader of people. It’s why the camp has become as awesome as it is and it keeps getting bigger and bigger each year.

Wes Smith’s Cali Cuts EP Out Now on Punks Music | Interview with Label Manager Olly Gee

Another agent mission completed for the ItsWesSmithYo! interviews. This time I floated over to the UK for a chat with Olly Gee, label manager at Punks Music. Punks released Wes Smith’s Cali Cuts EP August 3rd and trust –  they are all HEATERS.

Tell me about your role at Punks:

I am the Punks label manager. I work with our artists, distributors, A&R people and designers to improve and promote our product. I also handle most of the day to day running of the label. Mark and Dom (Stanton Warriors) are very hands on with Punks so I essentially act as a filter between all of the contributors and them. Everything is signed off by the Stantons so I condense all the information into manageable portions for them to go through. We meet as often as possible to talk about how things are going and to make decisions on what is going to work for the label going forward.

Give us a little history on Punks and what direction you are heading:

The label has been around a long time, well over a decade. It has always been a slow burner though as the Stantons have released most of their music on bigger/major labels. Mark and Dom relaunched Punks early last year and it kinda blew up from the word go, they have built a great legacy musically and command a huge social media following with which helps us a lot. All the magazines and blogs have been really supportive of what we are doing and the Punks artists have really come through with great material for us. This has allowed Punks to grow quite quickly, everything is coming together as we hoped it would.

Wes Smith/Punks, how did you choose Wes? Do you have a personal favorite on the EP?: 

Actually, Wes was picked up by Mark And Dom before I came on board. I know they are well sold on Wes musically. Wes carries himself well in the industry, he promotes himself very well as a brand and what he does really fits with Punks.

My personal favourite on the EP is “The Tribe”. I’ve been playing it out for a while now, those metallic sounding perc loops are on point. We’ve also been playing Techwerk and getting a good response on dance floors. People seem to enjoy the whole EP. The tunes are tried and tested so we know it’s going to be a great release.

You mentioned that you had been playing Wes’s tunes out. Tell us about you as a producer/dj – who are you as an artist?

I am one-third of the Freerange DJ’s from Cornwall (UK). We’ve been DJing together for a lot of years and out 1st release came in 2009.

We all have our separate strengths within the group but we work together really well which is ace. We try not to put too much pressure on each other and things just always seem to work out well for us, its pretty cool like that actually.

We’ve been really lucky in that we have been able to accomplish the majority of our goals when ever we have set them. We try not to take ourselves too seriously but for some reason people keep on booking us. I think its because we like to party….  As long as we are having fun that all that matters to us really. So far so good!

We have some fresh new material finished which will be available in the next few months that we are really excited about. It’s definitely the best material to come out of Ave’s studio to date.

What’s next for Punks?

We’re constantly working on new ways to improve the way that the label runs and the extend the support that we offer to our artists.

We’ve had a great reception from DJs and fans alike from all over the world. Everyone’s podcasts/mixes seem to be absolutely crammed with Punks tunes and some people are even having the Punks logo tattooed on themselves which is amazing.

The Stanton Warriors new Rebel Bass album drops soon. It’s a fantastic record and the level of hype for it is huge, I think it will be a bit of a game changer. Although Rebel Bass is coming out on Central Station Records its going to bring a lot more eyes and lend a tone of credibility/exposure to what we are doing at Punks.

I think the next logical step will be for us to start throwing some Punks branded parties. Our artists and the Punks brand are definitely strong enough to make a good job of that and It would be great to be able to offer extra entertainment to our supporters whilst pushing the Punks sound out to new audiences.

We have a lot of ideas that we want to launch when the time is right. Right now Punks is enjoying a really nice period of organic growth, it’s an exciting time all round really.

We are looking forward to the Wes Smith release, its been in the pipeline for a little while now so we’re happy to get it out there for everyone to enjoy. Early feedback suggests that its going to be a hit!

All of our artists have some awesome new music on its way. Mafia Kiss, Marten Horger, Sly-One, Nixon and Left/Right all have wicked releases coming up in the next few months that we’re all super hyped on.

Punks has a lot of plans that I won’t go into now, but we have really big goals set for the label and artists. Everyone will see a huge push in the next 12 months to get as much progressive new music as possible out there for everyone to enjoy. We are really enthusiastic about the next phase, the wheels are in motion so keep an eye on our media pages for updates!

Are You Ready for some ShOOnanigans? Wes Smith hits San Francisco this week!

Cosmic chaps and sonic mutton chops are on the menu for this course of Wes Smith’s Magic Fugu odyssey.

If you have been following the fugu, I did a piece a few weeks ago with DJ Deckard of the Space Cowboys, a San Francisco based Burner music and art collective. Wes had just dropped his dopeness for the Space Cowboy’s RipeCast and was on his way to Santa Monica and Miami. I got to catch up with the illustrious Jenny Shu (aka DJ ShOOey) also of the Space Cowboys, to talk about Wes’s return to Cali this weekend  in San Fransisco.

Tell me about ShOOnanigans – 

When I was envisioning what the party was going to look like, my whole inspiration was to bring together all the DJS that I love in the San Fransisco area. Usually parties in the area don’t have headliners – they are made up of Burning Man collectives and camps so there isn’t a lot of segregation.

Space Cowboys had two night shows this year, Halloween and New Years Eve. I wanted to do something for my birthday and ShOONanigans was a really good opportunity to bring people together before we all get out to the playa. Since we haven’t had a show since New Years in a club setting it will draw a large crowd. There will be Space Cowboys working the door and volunteering to help put it all together from top to bottom. We put in a lot of work to throw our shows and people really rally and get things done. Essentially everyone is coming together and doing what we do so well together.

This one has a headliner – what made you decide to buck the norm?

I have been following Wes’s music as a fan for a while now. When he contacted Space Cowboys about doing the RipeCast, I took the opportunity to talk to him and see if he would be interested to play a show for my birthday. He’s a really nice guy and we were able to easily build a rapport together. I personally incorporate a lot of Wes’s tunes into my sets and I wanted him to be a part of the show.  I’m really excited for the opportunity to bring all of these people together and have a great time.

You were just on my coast a few weeks ago for PEX, a regional burn in Maryland. Tell me about how the other side gets down: 

The Space Cowboys collaborated a pool stage with the Vitamin B crew from NYC. We had QDup play and everyone was very welcoming. The Vitamin B crew is a great bunch, it was so much fun.

What I didn’t realize was that the East Coast had so many burn events. I think we just immerse ourselves in the culture here and it’s just second nature to us to end at Burning Man. It puts it in perspective that not everyone can get all the way to Black Rock City, so they put their blood sweat and tears into the regional events. I think it is great, it was a wonderful experience and on a much smaller scale which is nice, almost like how Burning Man was years ago.

It’s Wes Smith Yo! Trusts Unicorns? Next stop – Santa Monica, CA

The magic fugu tour keep breathing new life to the US and beyond packing venues to the gills and rocking the electric funkalicious. This time I catch up with Dave Loomstein, aka Dave Loomer, of The Cruz Coalition. Cruz Coalition (in conjunction with Camp Charlie) is present the 4th annual “In Unicorns We Trust”. This is a fundraiser for a famous Burning Man camp, Camp Charlie, this Friday in Santa Monica.

Tell me of your first Burning Man experience:

A friend convinced me to go and I had an amazing life changing experience. I was a music aficionado forever but I was not into making music at the time other than mix tapes. When i returned from my first burn I started DJing and producing music immediately and have been doing it ever since. This year’s Burning Man will be my tenth in a row.

Camp Charlie is a theme camp and art car at Burning Man. Tell me a short history of this camp:

Camp Charlie was developed around Charlie the unicorn cartoon. The art car is a mainstay, it’s a huge car with great sound. It’s super fun and it is both a labor of love and of patience.

How did you become a Camp Charlie camper & enthusiast aka a Unicorn?

Charlie is my third camp so far. You could call me “polycamperous” with another camp called Nutz. It started as a no expectations journey, but it became about music so I go to the camp I am most closely aligned with musically. Also to get different flavors of the burn you truly need exposure to different people and experiences.

You just got back from EDC. Tell us what you did there:

Cruz Coalition has worked the last seven EDC’s in Los Angeles and five in Vegas doing the production aspect for EDC. From acquiring the entertainers to building the stages. It can be anything from building, staffing, biz management, booking, schedules, artist relations, etc.

Let’s talk about “In Unicorns We Trust”, the event this weekend:

This is Cruz Coalition’s 3rd co production of “IUWT” with Camp Charlie and we are really excited- the event is in an underground art and event space that only has rare and special events there. You have to work a lot of connections and relationships to even be able to throw an event here. The whole lineup is made up of a combination of resident djs, local headliners and guest djs. You will see that Wes is coming into his own as a headliner and we are really happy to see him join us for this one. He has been such an advocate for Camp Charlie since his first time last year.

We add a LOT of variety to offer the people a lot of possibilities throughout the night. It’s a really sweet event that brings a lot of community energy… we as unicorns bring a lot of energy and thunder to everything we do, it’s going to be one to remember.

Any advice to me as a first time Unicorn this year at Burning Man?

Get there early and see it grow, a complete metamorphosis. It’s a pleasure to be a part of it and the community keeps expanding. Get into the spirit, enjoy and participate. It’s about the experience and while you are part of an ensemble, you still have to go and make your own great experience. When it’s like that – you need to be about you. If it’s not an experience you cannot immerse yourself 100% with then it’s not your experience.

It’s Wes Smith Yo! Teaming Up With Lady Waks to Shake Some Hot Cakes Bass!

And the boom goes on! With 3 out of 50 tunes on the Hot Cakes Bass Shakers compilation – It’s Wes Smith Yo! continues on a magic fugu ride like none other, including a dope ass unreleased track called BARS with Markk Polo! So that’s like 6% nerds! Big ups Lady Waks, Deekline, Martin Flex and crew!

Available on the release are two mixes by Lady Waks, a name that is synonymous with breakbeat. She is not only an accomplished DJ and producer but has also earned Breakspoll awards for Best Dj, Best Producer, and Best Radio Show. She is also well known for her skills as a designer, photographer, label owner and promoter.

Both mixes feature hits that are currently rocking speakers as well as bangers that have now become classic tunes, the first lady of breakbeat masterfully gives us a dose of the best beats from artists like Wes Smith, Deekline, Martin Flex, KMFX, The Stanton Warriors and Marten Hørger. Do You Even Wiggle? An Interview with Eric Riggsbee

Growing the #MagicFugu connection across the states,  Agent 137 catches up with Eric Riggsbee, the co-founder of Faultline – a Oakland based breakbeat monthly. Having met last year 4th of July weekend at Faultline, we quickly settled in and discussed Eric’s career, the state of beats and the creative charge happening in downtown Oakland.

So tell me about Faultline-

Well as you know, Faultline is a monthly Breakbeat party in Oakland, CA hosted by resident DJs- myself, DJ 138, and Justin Johnson, along with local guest DJs. Faultline has a new venue this Saturday for the grand opening-there is more foot traffic in this location and it is contained to all in one room and it us every 4th Saturday at The Rock Steady.


I have been talking to a lot of producers, DJS and promoters about the state of breaks and their take on the genre. Faultine is a primarily breakbeat show. What is your opinion on the genre and maybe help bridge the gap?

Breaks are a couple of years behind of some of the other genres but there are a lot more events now. Most of the DJs are breaks djs and we are getting all the local celebrities out of Burning Man camps. Space Cowboys, Dusty Rhino, Camp Charlie etc and they seem to be on the same page. Bass music has been remarketed for the youth though, in the past breaks had very little sub genres because there really were not enough people producing the different sounds to break it out into sub genres. Now it’s evolving around us. While it is coming back I think we all can agree that it is coming in baby steps, It’s because we all want to do well and also do it right. With all of that going on, seeing more events and seeing the word breaks more often (at least the word is being thrown around more and more), we are driven to do it… the timing is right.

Burning Man stems from the Bay Area and I remember when I attended last year, the presence of breaks was very strong. Tell me how you see the Burner lifestyle is affecting music and art in Oakland. 

I live in a neighborhood with a lot of warehouses that a lot of the art for Burning Man is being built. Sometimes I take it for granted thinking it’s going on everywhere. I find myself Djing more and more with the burner crowd. We are very close to the Burning Man experience here which pushes creativity in so many ways- everyone around is doing art, music, SOMETHING. There are a lot of incredibly talented people around Oakland and San Francisco using self-expression in some way shape or form. It’s an exciting time.

What about the self-expression of Eric Riggsbee? Tell us a little about your musical background – 
I played piano since 6 years of age until 9 and then drums from 10 until now. I was in bands from 12-22 and started djing at 18 in 1998. Basically my progression in music with drums helped me learn to DJ, it helps with rhythm. Breaking down the beat is a big part of being a drummer and it helps with DJing Breaks.

You have started on production as well – how did you start with production?

I took a community college EM class in 1998-1999 for Logic and used Reason for a while but now I’m using Ableton by trial and error and also by doing a lot of shadowing of other producers.

Any advice to aspiring producers?
Produce what you want to produce and don’t worry how the track is going to sell or hit the top 10. Tracks that lay down a groove that move people are more important to me. Look what is really important to you and let that guide what you create.

What is next for you as an artist and Faultline?
  • Justin Johnson runs Barely Legal Records and there are a lot of big things happening on his label.  Adrenalinez will have a full length album out later this year. Other releases coming will be remixes of Adenalinez ‘Wet Me” by The Gulf Gate Project and Run Riot, remixes of Justin’s track “Body Movin” by Geon and Adrenalinez, a Sychosis remix of EvilBeat “On My Beat”, and then a massive EP from Justin called “The Discos of Tron” that will also include remixes from Wes Smith, discObeta, Fire-Beat, and more TBA.
  • In July Faultine will be doing a breaks and drum&bass throwback to Electic Hectic called Foundation with the drum&bass crew Dystopia. If it goes well we will continue that on the second Friday of the month in Oakland.
  •  NEXT is Wiggle in San Diego this weekend with Wes Smith, Omega Squad and Ghost Md.

The It’s Wes Smith Yo! Tour – “Virginia is for Breakbeat Lovers” Edition

Wes is a DMV native and is excited to get back to where the magic fugu all started. On Saturday he will be playing at a three day festival “MAY DAYZ” alongside a super talent area lineup (shouts to my peers – wish I could be there!). The location has changed to the wonderful Cove Campground in Gore VA. If you haven’t been there, it’s a special place and great for a springtime festival.

Wes has been blowing up the circuit on his It’s Wes Smith Yo! tour from India, all over the West and East Coast and even to Russia. Check out the album and his latest Lady Waks mix while riding to the show YO!
