My 2015 Annual Top 10 List of Big Bass & Breaks Things w/The Crystal Method & YOU

What an amazing year.  The best thing I can say about 2015 is thank YOU for making my life awesome.  And now I have a story to tell.

Event_TCM_Avalon_TCMTroopers, Avalon, Los Angeles, It's Wes Smith Yo, EDM, Rave, Bassmusic, Breaks, Breakbeat

It’s late 2014, I’m back stage with The Crystal Method.  They’ve just blown up Avalon Nightclub to a massive Los Angeles crowd including Storm Troopers to celebrate the occasion.  I had met them earlier in the year and become a bit of a study.  I was lucky enough to open for them that night.

The day before this I had driven back from Burning Man.  Earlier that day I made the trip from San Diego with my good pals Brian Millar of Omega Squad and Adia Break.  6 hours later I had played one of my best sets ever and witnessed first hand how legends rock a party and drop mind altering bass.  Then I found myself back stage about to sink a shot of tequila with Ken Jordan, Scott Kirkland and friends.   Gulp.

People who drink Tequila generally have lots of advice, sometimes even good advice.  I got some great advice from The Crystal Method that night.

This inspired me to get busy planning 2015.  My notes said things like “release album”, “go on tour”, “stay focused”, “get paid”, “meet fans”, “support others”, “collaborate”, “be humble”, “mutual respect”, “create first, talk later” and so on…

So the year began and flew by…on top of a mind blowing album tour [mad props to all the promoters and believers listed here] and releases on so many great labels like Diablo Loco, Tech D, Pooty Club and more….check out the top ten things I can remember that made the bass drop for me!  Thanks to all of YOU, mentioned or not, for making this all possible.  If I missed anyone, kick me in this shins on the 2016 tour;)

Ten…Beatport Positions.  Calendar year #2 breaks artist [link] and label [link], multiple #1’s in multiple genres, multiple top slots on the global chart, top releases on the top 5 breaks labels and 8 tracks in the annual top 100 [link].  It’s all sales, and all fans that make that happen.  Big ups to everyone that supports music and the people that make it.  It takes money to make quality, original music and without your support there will be no music and that would be bad:)

Charts_2015Artists, It's Wes Smith Yo, Dj Fixx, Beatport Top, Bassmusic, Breaks, breakbeat, Juice Recordings

Nine…Juice Recordings Team.  My man Pauly Fixx laid down some of the best remixes of his career and continues to support and inspire me along with other label mates including Omega Squad, DubAxFace, B-Phreak, Breaking News, F-Word and more.  Kelly Ross was the boss on more interviews, articles and road trips than I can count.  Jen Holmes took the release management and promo next level.  EmDubz, Sumo Fish and Juan Carlos on the marketing genius duties.  Robert, Brad and the Jamvana crew working miracles on the distribution tip.  And to wrap it all up a HUGE Remix album with stellar performances from Colombo, Phatkidz, Omega Squad, and more…Massive shout outs.

Eight…San Diego Family Support.  Contrary to many people’s belief, I am based in San Diego, California where things have been heating up for a long time time before I arrived not to mention one of the top spots in the country to visit, party and chill.  Our local/regional scene has given myself and Omega Squad massive support as we have each other.  Big ups to all the Wigglers, Brians and the one and only Skandar, yes that’s his real name.

DubPistols_KillaSound_WSGraphicSquare, It's Wes Smith Yo

Seven…Dub Pistols Support.  Capping an already insane year of remixes, the Killa Sound shot, resulted in one of my best remixes to date.  Big ups Barry Ashworth and the Sunday Best crew.  I am forever grateful for the opportunity.

Event_BurningMan_CharlieParty_2015, Camp Charlie, It's Wes Smith Yo, Burning Man 2015, EDM, Breakbeat, Bassmusic, Breaks, Art Car

Six…Burning Man and Desert Things.  Support from Camp Charlie went from 10 to 100.  Thanks to Danielle, Mindy, Sarah, Travis & all the Unis.  They had a massive breaks night @ the burn [Catch the full video of my set here]; Slut Garden let the bass kick, big ups Dot Diggler and team; Dusty Rhino got dirty on the stormiest night ever, props to NUGZ for driving slow; and Dusty Poon Saloon, ya had to be there;) big ups Wheelers.   Last but certainly not least, Space Cowboys off playa support was massive.  So many to mention but Jen “ShOOey” Shu, Keith Deckard and Zach Moore have shined through.  And we smashed Public Works in San Francisco…boom.

Event_PublicWorks, It's Wes Smith Yo, San Francisco, ShOOnanigans, Space Cowboys, Bassmusic, Breaks, Breakbeat

Five…Miami Music Week 2015.  Not only did I make it there but playing prime slots at FSOB, Gimme A Break, and a fun Thump interview with The Crystal Method…bam.  Respect to Glyn Morgan and Geo Lopez.

Article_BreakspollJimmyBreaks_WSCallout, It's Wes Smith Yo, Breakspoll, Manchester, UK, Bassmusic, Breakbeat

Four…My First UK Trip.  I finally made it to Breakspoll, met James “Mixmag” Glenton and the Headset Heroes among so many awesome people.  Thank you Jimmy Brayks and friends.  When in Rome….or Liverpool…meet up with Playrise Digital.  They make cool games for you to play.  I met them in Liverpool and can’t wait for the Tabletop Racing World Tour project to drop on PS4. Big shout to Nick Burcombe & team.  Sup Sehyun;)

Event_Breakspoll-2015-lineup-550x778

Three…Lady Waks & IBWT Support.  Waks gave me a slot on her podcast to promote the album, featured me numerous times in her sets, licensed multiple tracks for her Hot Cakes project with Deekline, Martin Flex & friends…then to top it all brought me to Russia to play IBWT @ Kosmonaut.  Her IBWT crew put my head on a bus, like a public bus driving around St. Petersburg;)  This opened my eyes to a new level of work ethic and unity among crews.  Massive shout to the hardest working lady, no scratch that person, in bass.

Two…Stanton Warriors support.  I got the call from Dom & Mark early in the year and they gave me a shot on Punks Music.  My Cali Cuts EP went to number 1 on Beatport.  I also played King King LA with them and was featured on some mixes and their social empire;).   Big shout to the boys and Olly G for keeping it smooth.  Ding ding ding.

Release_Punks_WS, It's Wes SMith Yo, Mafia Kiss, , Jimmy Le Mac, Skapes, UFO, , Sly-One, BAssmusic, Breaks, Breakbeat, EDM, Punks Music

One…The Crystal Method Support.  These guys are among a unique group of professionals at the top of the EDM game.  Their positive, welcoming, no bullshit attitude is apparent at first and grows on the keen observer as time goes on.  Aside from general advice, inclusion @ Avalon and massive support for Bring Back That Funk, I was given an hour takeover slot to premiere the album on their wildly popular #CommunityService show.

I was then featured on the show 10+ more times throughout the year and also included in their top ten tracks of 2015 along with label mates Omega Squad.  As if that wasn’t insane enough, they gave me the opportunity to remix Difference, Grace and Over It.  But wait, their’s more…I got to work with vocals from Dia Frampton, Franky Perez and LeAnn Rimes.  Oh, and a Billboard Magazine premiere and Thump interview…and for all that, it’s clear why they are #1.

What else can I say, but thank YOU!

It’s Wes Smith Yo! Burning Man 2015 Tour @ Slut Garden

Dot Diggler is next for my “It’s Wes Smith at Burning Man Yo!” interviews.  Dot resides at Slut Garden during his stay in the dust. This is a camp that I remember well from last year – it’s colorful, fun and the music was always on point. Getting to see Wes play up on that stage is going to be a sight to see with the crowd dressed up in their space wear. BOOM!

Check out the video by clicking this picture!

Slut Garden is certainly an interesting name – tell me about Slut Garden and what you all are about:

We are the ultimate party on the playa and are a real interactive camp. Whether it is the shadow boxes, platforms, The Wet Spot (bar), dome or clothing exchange (Slutty Seconds). We have people who go out in the crowd to recruit girls to dance in the shadow boxes and we aim to never have them empty of sexy silhouettes dancing.

What’s your role for Slut Garden?

I’m in charge of staging build scaffolding, setting up the lighting and am a main residency DJ. I am based out of Seattle but the founding members and campers are mainly from Portland and Montana.

That’s great – how did you get involved with Slut Garden?

This is my second year with Slut Garden, after my first burn I played a hip hop set with my best friend Matt (Pressha) for a hip hop happy hour. Slut Garden was having some sound issues so I jumped under the sound booth and fixed what was wrong. They were appreciative and they asked me to come back to play. I started with an empty crowd and once I was done there was a huge crowd. I was offered to play a fundraiser in Seattle and it just exploded from there. I don’t rep a crew or a label when it comes to Slut Garden…so I promo the heck outta it and get the word out about them.

SlutGarden 1

Speaking of promo – tell me about your biggest music events/parties:

Wednesday: Sluts In Space when Wes Smith is playing, it’s an astronaut/space themed event.

Thursday: Booty Wonderland with Deekline and Dot Diggler ++

Friday: Satan’s Schoolgirls that DJ Dan hosting with Donald Glaude ++

Slut Garden 3

You were the one that booked Wes. How do you know about Wes Smith all the way in Seattle?

I asked Wes if he would be down to play a set – he is one of my favorite producers. I found his tracks awhile back and the tracks went off really well at the burn one of my good friends Justin (Blacklist) Alson also plays a lot of his tunes out as well.

Any advice to aspiring DJs/producers out there going to Burning Man?

It’s good to make connections in this industry it is very hard if you do not. Everyone is a dj/producers/etc so you really have to set yourself apart from the others.

Tell me why you do all of this and keep coming back to Burning Man:

One of the reasons why I love Burning Man is because breaks are reigning supreme (parallel with house). I have been a breaks DJ for 15 years ever since I heard Icey’s Essential Mix and then started getting into Baby Anne, Fixx, Volume, Huda Hudia, Deeklline, Plump DJs, Freestylers and Stanton Warriors. I have been blessed to play with most of them except Deekline and that comes true this year.

Slut Garden 2

Also, I have never met such a hard-working group so focused on their goal. It’s a camp full of Alphas and surprisingly-  it really works. The founder of Slut Garden, Brad, is the shit. He is a superb leader of people. It’s why the camp has become as awesome as it is and it keeps getting bigger and bigger each year.

Check out the Dot Diggler mix I have been bumpin’in my speakers this week:

This year’s Burn is going to be interesting and I can’t wait to meet you and see/hear all the awesome on that beautiful stage surrounded by those shadow box dancers – thank you sir, see you in the dust!

It’s Wes Smith Yo! Album Tour Continues to Honolulu, Hawaii

This stop on the magic fugu tour, Wes Smith swims ashore to the islands of Hawaii while tripping the light fantastic. Agent 137 finds herself swimming along with Bret Shoopman to discuss the upcoming Honolulu show.

Event_Hawaii_2015-06-13_IG, Wes Smith- Hawaii, #JuiceRecordings, #TheJuiceSquad, #StickyBumps, #ItsWesSmithYo, #WesSmith, #EDM, #UDM, #Bass, #Funk, #Breaks, #Breakbeat, #Garage, #2step, #UK, #FutureGarage, #IWSYTour, #MagicFugu, #BringBackThatFunk, #Califunkya, #CampCharlie,

What is the music scene in Honolulu about?

Most parties in the area have been mainly a house scene, deep and bassline house. I came to Shaun Coon (aka Coondog), someone who is doing a lot of parties in the area (including a monthly boat party) with the idea for an all breaks show. I looked to him because he has helped to change the scene and build it up in the area. He agreed and now we are collaborating with Green Minded, Aloha State Breaks, Stay Up Movement and Sub.Mission Hawaii for the show. This is the first all breaks party that has been thrown in a long time in Honolulu. We are really excited to be able to bring breaks back in this way with the right people/artists.

Juice Hawaii

So it’s your first breaks party in a long time, why Wes Smith to represent it?

I knew of Wes Smith over the last two years from Soundcloud and Beatport and was really digging his vibe/music. I would often play his tunes on my Monday weekly radio show on Preserving the Pitch. Eventually I friend requested him and we started chatting online, fortunately he has friends and/or family on the island so we were able to book him here. It’s hard to get artists out due to the flight cost alone – so being able to get Wes was great bonus for this party.

Juice Head Hawaii

Tell me about you as an artist:

I (Silva Sativa) began in the scene back in Kansas but in 2004/2005 I was introduced to breaks and I fell in love with the genre- Deekline, Ed Solo, Wizard, and Stanton Warriors were huge influences on me at the time. I moved to Colorado and became an even bigger fan. Ever since I have been trying to find new artists and curate my collection. I go beyond the Beatport top 100 so to speak and try to find some real gems from up and coming artists.

Who are some of the new up and coming artists that you think produce some of those gems?

Sure, besides Wes Smith some of the people I really enjoy are:

1) Omega Squad

2) Noemi & Yera_W

3) DoubleFacez

4) DubaxFace

5) Bombo Rosa of Punks Music

Chart Action | Beatport Breaks Toppers & Heaters

Big Ups #JuiceHeads…we’ve got some great action going on in the Beatport Charts…straight chillin’ with the likes of DJ Icey, Freestylers, Agent K and more.  Here’s a couple highlights for this week b/w of Everybody Git Down & Don’t Stop The Robot (Wes Smith’s Califunkya Remix), both by yours truly.

Don’t Stop the Robot blasted on in the 70’s, and has been a fan favorite on Soundcloud & Facebook.  Check it here:

Holiday Party Busted; Officer D.J. Hyper Tells The Juice Squad to Turn Down the Funk a Notch

The Juice Squad has been to some dope parties in their day, but few compare to the 2013 Bring Back That Funk fest @ the Beatport Breaks #1 slot hosted by Wes Smith & White Boy Awesome.  The red carpet was full of fan favorites from Splitloop & Brad Smith to Head Set Heroes, but here’s a few notable outtakes from TJS’ water cooler captain M.C. Lickey.

2013-12-17_BeatportBreaks_#2

The line to get in to The Juice Factory was crazy but kudos to Agent K who showed support with a fist full of Money.  Early on DJ Icey brought some Freaky Stuff and DJ Fixx was straight tossing Dolla Bills while Curtis B kept trying to Throw It Back.  At one point I thought I smelled a rat but it was just Keith Mackenzie trying to Freak Dat while Colombo was handing off the dance circle to a Part of Me that was poppin’ out of control to the sounds of Fort Knox Five’s Party Pushers.

Inside the main tent, Beta was showing skills with Mad Rhythm on the 1200’s and Colombo was gittin things twisted @ the bar mixing up The Brainkiller.  This put Kid Panel in a freeze saying “U Know How I Do” when I’m on that Diablo Loco.  Stanton Warriors were getting ready to Cut Me Up with sick bass while Krafty Kuts seemed to Feel Like Jumpin to Deekline’s Groove Thang in the booty bass room.  Later in the night I saw Slyde getting electric and he just said “I Can’t Help It  man”, Will Atkinson is doing Perfecto dropping Damage on the dance floor.

Just as as things were hitting capacity and started to become a real Hot Mess, Kuplay insisted we should Never Say No to The Pooty Club so we opened the doors to let them in.  Turned out Bella was right behind them telling them they should find Somebody To Love and that’s when Officer D.J. Hyper popped his head up with some Lies about the noise limits and proceeded to put a stop to the Breed of funk that had fueled the month long frenzy.

TJS being the sporting kind had a brief chat with Officer Hyper and figured what goes up must come down.  So after an unforgettable fiesta numero uno, we agreed to dial the volume down to #2 on the scale of 10 and slowly wind things out for 2013;)

For a complete run down of the fiesta, check the Bring Back That Funk page.

Charts, Okinawan Potatoes and Kalua Pork

On the chart front this week…Wes Smith/White Boy Awesome’s Bring Back That Funk holds tight @ the Beatport Breaks #1 slot; DJ Moon’s Beat On My Drum jumps up @ #22 (DJ Fixx Remix)/#84 (Original); Wes Smith/Duble Time’s Push That System (DJ Fixx Remix) posts up at #29; and Wes Smith/Dirty Kicks’ It Makes Ya Move sit’s on the ledge @ 89.

While we were chilling with Deekline, Kuplay, Stanton Warriors and Paul Oakenfold b/w of  Perfecto Breaks…we also learned this week that Okinawan Potatoes are purple, Kalua Pork is salty and they taste great together.  Keep It Low Friends!  TJS;)
